With the exception of the
reception classes and Y1 members of the council are elected by their
year groups. These representatives then have the responsibility for
bringing items of concern or interest from their group to the whole
council and therefore to the school community. The outcomes of the
discussions, decisions and requests from other members are then
reported back to each year group.
By this means, the children develop a sense of
partnership and ownership, and learn to deal with issues of real
concern and begin to understand their own potential to to overcome
difficulties and affect change.
With adults and pupils thus sharing responsibility
for aspects of the day to day life of the school, the children see a
cooperative community in action. In doing so, they learn
self-confidence, social skills and an ability to behave responsibly
toward each other and their teachers and support staff. |
